The Magic is in the Mundane...

We all look for some magic sign, signal, moment, person, pill, et… that will galvanize us to make the necessary changes and take the actions we need to achieve our desires and goals. Do any of these sound familiar – “I am just waiting on…” or “I’m going to start on Monday,” or “It’s because he/she did not…” How many times have you said any of these statements?

Unfortunately, these are ways in which our brains trick us into instant gratification/satisfaction rather than doing the mundane daily work that provides no instant satisfaction needed to progress. This is the snooze button hit at 5 a.m., this is the hot Cheetos bag at the convenience store after work, this is the just one more beer on a Friday night.

The magic really happens when you master the mundane. This means getting used to that which is not exciting but is necessary. Consistency over time is what makes all the difference. It is when we are not that gets us all in a frenzy. See one bag of Cheetos, a beer or two on the weekend or one snooze button hit in the morning is not going to make a noticeably big difference in the grander scheme of things. It is when that one or two beers on a weekend now become Friday, Saturday, and Sunday six packs, Cheetos every now and then become and evening affair and when it becomes routine to hit the snooze button every day. This is when things become a real issue and we find ourselves 10/20/30/40 pounds over our goal weight and feeling like poop about ourselves.

This is where the mundane tasks of daily work on ourselves becomes important and embracing the “suck” to achieve our desired outcomes becomes critical. There is nothing fun about getting up early to workout, eating celery instead of Cheetos, and skipping a couple hours of fun time drinking with friends. It sucks to say no and to feel left out. The transition is a pain in the butt. The good thing is – it does become easier once you make the transition and habit formation occurs. It’s the will of the why that is the driver in this situation, and you need to want the desired outcome more than the current satisfaction.
