Caregiver Care is Critical Too!

On February 16, 2019, I gave my father his final bath, placed him personally on the gurney and was the final person to touch him when placing the blanket over his head while they put him in the hearse. It was one of my proudest moments of my life. See I had cared for him for an entire year before his passing after moving both he and my mother into my home. The final days were the roughest but also some of the best memories I have of my father. Cutting his hair, discussing life and just being in his presence was what I needed in order to fill that which I needed before his passing.

As a caregiver it was critical that I cared for myself as well. Recently one of my dearest clients in Shred, Norma shared her story as a caregiver to her husband. She single-handedly survived him by administering CPR for over thirty minutes prior to the emergency services arriving. To this day she continues to care for her husband in his weaken state. She gave everything she had and realized that her health was beginning to deteriorate so she made the choice to join Shred. She has lost over five inches on her waist and over ten pounds and feels amazing. She says she finally feels alive again feels confident in her ability to care for those she loves.

Norma now realizes the importance of caring for herself. She knows that if her own body and mind are not cared for that she will not be able to care for others. How about you? I know most of you who read this are care takers of some sort. You are mothers, fathers, business executives caring for your employees, medical professionals and so much more. Are you caring for yourself as you should or are you allowing your own health to waiver?

Action items:

Take a real assessment of your health and be honest with yourself. Key questions to ask are:

Do you spend at least four hours a week on deliberately moving such as yoga, walking, exercise class, lifting weights or other actual “workouts.”

Do you plan your meals that have the needed nutrition that is required for your body or are you going by the seat of your pants and drive throughs?

Are you taking time for your mental health such as meditation or mindfulness on a daily basis?

If you said no to any of the above questions you may be heading toward trouble. I am here to help you. Reach out to me! I am always available to help guide you! You just have to reach out! There is hope and there is help!
