Look at those guns!! Super Proud of you Tania!!
Sometimes Your Dirty Laundry Really Stinks!
I have never said nor tried to tell a story of my past that was anything but the colorful history that it really was. I am proud of who I have become, and it is due to the struggles and mistakes that I made historically. I’d like to think of it as “building character.” To the best of my ability, I have tried to make up for those whom I’ve effected, but being an entrepreneur and failing a couple times, I have a couple of skeletons in the closet that wear my dirty clothes!
Today I was affected by such a skeleton, and it was out of left field. No need for detail but it did affect me. The guilt, the shame, and the feelings of impostor syndrome popped up which startled me. I share this because we all are fighting a battle of some sort and for each of us, no matter how small or trivial it may seem to some, it is important to us in the moment. I also realize that it is in these moments where I can either stand tall or fall back into unhealthy habits.
As a trainer now for over 25 years combined, I have come to realize that an individual’s coping mechanisms towards this thing called life are the number one contributor to their well-being. Do we reach for quick fixes such as food, alcohol, and/or cigarettes when things get stressful? Or do we use movement, art, music, and/or nature to relieve our stresses? The latter is not easy nor is it quick. That’s why we tend to use quick fixes. This is why I found myself in a lot of trouble numerous times in my life.
Finally, after 45 years on this earth it seems I have figured out that the easy way becomes quite painful in the long run so now I know how to take my frustrations out on the gym floor. Don’t get wrong though – a nice beer or a beautiful cranberry fritter find their way into my system every now and again. I am human. The good part is not very often.
Where are you at in your journey? How often do your skeletons and dirty laundry haunt you?
Action items:
1. Take an assessment on how you handle the stresses in your life.
2. Do you have “dirty laundry: that needs to be cleaned?
3. Think of the unhealthy coping mechanisms you use and try to be aware of them.
4. Then next time under stress – attempt to use movement or another healthy outlet to handle it.
It’s our reactions that govern who we are and that is the only control we have in any situation! Take the good one as I did when things happened this morning. I took it out on my class and it was an amazing energy once I was able to use it in that manner.
