Mindfu*ks!

Being one of the Trainers for the DCG (Abq’s Pro-Football Team), I get to see what most do not. I get to see the tears, fears, and anger experienced only through the eyes of a professional athlete when experiencing a loss. I also get to experience the excitement, exhilaration, and joy of the wins standing inside the pit with the players during games. The difference between both is mindset.

Let me explain. Going into the second half in Phoenix we were up by 2 against the top team in the entire IFL (the league we compete in.) While in Phoenix Arizona in front of over 10,000 individuals in the same stadium the Phoenix Suns play, we were beating this top ranked team. The last play of the 2nd quarter going into half-time our QB was sacked and suffered a pretty serious injury. Those that don’t know the QB is the heartbeat and the mastermind driving scoring in the game of football. I along with Nancy carried our QB off the field and begin providing medical services to him. The entire mindset of the team went from excitement and exhilaration to fear and anger instantly. We were obliterated in the second half of the game and lost.

The opposite was true just this last weekend. We went into the second half of our home game against the second-best rated team in the IFL 0 to 30. Yes, we did not score a single point and they scored 30. Embarrassing to say the least. Remember we are down our star QB, and our new ones just hadn’t clicked just yet. Coming out of the locker room into the second half though, something shifted. The mindset of the team! We had a great play by our offense that drove our first point of the game and all of a sudden, a “can do” attitude came upon the entire team. The drives were harder, the plays were better executed, and the overall mindset shifted. We outscored the visiting team in the second half of the game but unfortunately it was another loss suffered by our players.

What was the difference between the first half and the second half of both games – mindset. What is the difference between you achieving your fitness goals and not – mindset? What is the difference between you achieving any goals you set your mind to or not – YOUR MINDSET!

Our players raw talent is better than any team out there. Their ability to keep the mindset necessary to stay in the game while facing adversity is where the problem lies. I try not to get political in anything I do but just look at the term – Be a Zelensky. In the face of overwhelming pressure and power he has some how found a way to win. Now winning in these terms is up for interpretations but you understand my point.

So, if this man can overcome all his adversity – why can’t we achieve that which we desire? Its our mindset period. You have to want what you desire more then anything and then fight like hell for it. You can never give up and if you fall down – get your ass back up and fight again with differing tactics. Our players used differing tactics to win our second half. They didn’t give up and they outperformed the other team that was royally kicking our asses. Although it wasn’t enough – I was sincerely impressed.

Your action items:

1. Reflect on your current mindset when thinking about your milestones in life you would like to achieve.

2. Is it one of “I’ll get to it tomorrow” or is it “I’m starting right now and come rain, snow, hell, or high water – I’m going to do it?”

3. Be real with yourself and be aware of your mindset toward that desired goal.

4. If the mindset isn’t there – I’d suggest finding something that is more worth your while.
